Organized retailing - a way of creating monopolies – Part -2
One of the champions of organized retailing Reliance fresh has just opened in my area, which is one of the oldest localities in South Mumbai which uptill now was served by small individual vendors in an around the market of bhuleshwar. It is the first retail store which will sell food in an organized way.

Reliance fresh may just end up removing these vendors when consumer start buying in trolleys to avail all the discounts they can. Recently Economic Times reported how the big retail chains were selling cheap fruits and vegetables amid such food crises deliberately, and off-setting their losses by gaining on non-food items that the hawkers cant sell.

Such retail outlets have had to face ire not only in states like Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and Jharkhand but also in America, the father of such chains. America, the home to Wal-mart the biggest company in terms of revenues and having more than 5000 stores across the world but also in controversies about suppressing their employees from associating and for a dismal employee welfare record besides others.

This may be expected of a monopoly and since the ball is set rolling in India, we should try and avoid any such ills. There are many players in food retailing business – such as Subiksha, Big Apple, Spinach, Big Bazaar and the mammoth Reliance Fresh, but competition is still not present. These guys are also protected by preventing foreign direct investors.

Well why not open up retail for the foreign guys if it has to exist at all. With competition we may just avoid the short coming of a monopoly, shouldn’t we? In fact, organized retailing would be nice in the new developing centers such as New-Mumbai!

the major companies in India are just trying to capture the retail market and they are also ready to murder the small kirana shop owners. Government is also in their side and the small traders would have no option but to surrender in front of biggies like Reliance fresh and wal mart.

When big business houses enter the retail sector the small businessmen are bound to suffer. In fact some of these big retail businesses sell their products at unusually low prices that is a covert policy to attract consumers while forcing small groceries to close their shops. In India this will broaden the economic disparity that already exists impoverishing more people.

what do you do if prices go up..get crazy, right.now have you heard about farmers committing sucide in india ...
maybe!..the government announced a debt-waiver of 60,000 crore, and guess what 3 farmers on that very same day committed sucide..
the point is we are worried about job losses.is it??? vendors can be intigrated into the retail chain..retailing is highly labour intensive...
also if you work the maths that probably houswives do with their budgets, you’ll see that no retailer can afford to locate his shop to everyone’s convinence....therefore with energy prices soaring and the above mentioned, there will still be room for these vendors+petty pop-shops..
Also the retailer is no philanthorphist..he sells cheap because the MAX RETAIL PRICE is not the production price.... therefore he cuts into his profit ,to sell cheap.
in all this the consumer is benefitting.
further our retailers need to come up to a certain standard before tne WALMARTS comes in....don’t forget these m.n.c’s will be remitting the profit back to their nations.the law of nature is CHANGE its a bit tough but it is inevitable.therefore we should look to make this change a pleasant one..not fight it...

for a change solve this...
when the farmers(big+small) earn high profits due to high prices the whole nations is up in arms....news channels, govt, everyone is hit by high prices or inflation sets in.....prices are therefore kept low ,the profit of farmers dry up,and they have no choice except to die.BUT W’RE JUST FINE WITH IT?????????? ARE WE????????

Thoughtful one.To mention reliance, they almost monopolise over half the private sector business in India - with Petrol, Telecom and now Food retail. There is also a speculation that even Marks and Spencers in alliance with Reliance is soon going to hit Indian Metropolitan markets to begin with. The government certainly needs to take action before it is too late.
